(Correspondent Ding Jialing, Yu Zhitao) On February 22^nd, the China Higher Education Institute officially released the results of the evaluation of innovative talents training and academic competitions among Chinese universities 2014-2018. In the TOP 300 of the National General University Academic Competition Evaluation Results (undergraduate) in 2014-2018, our school ranked the third in the national comprehensive ranking with a total of 429 awards and a total score of 98.33, up from the sixth in the 2013-2017 evaluation results.

In December 2017, the Expert Working Group of the “Higher Education Competition Evaluation and Management System” of the Chinese Higher Education Society released in Hangzhou the evaluation results of the 2012-2016 Chinese Colleges and Universities Competition, kicking off the third-party evaluation of Chinese Colleges and Universities competitions. In 2014-2018, the competition was expanded to include 15 more competitions. The competitions added in the rankings in this round were expanded from the original “18+1” to “30+4”.

The results of the academic competition of college and university students comprehensively reflect the innovation and entrepreneurship education and practice level of college and university students, which is one of the landmark achievements of the quality training of students in higher education institutes. In 2018, Wuhan University won 429 national awards and more than 520 provincial and ministerial awards in various discipline competitions, and many events reached record highs. In the “FLTRP·Guocai Cup” National English Speech, Writing and Reading Competition, Wuhan University won the national grand finals after winning three special prizes in Hubei Province. In the 17th National College Robot Competition, our team won the first prize and the best strategy award; in the National College Students Mathematical Modeling Competition, our team won five first prizes and five second prizes, with the number of first prize topped the list of national ranking. The university’s total number of awards has also topped the limit of competition regulation.

The outstanding performance of Wuhan University in the ranking of evaluation results of the academic competition is the landmark achievement of the quality of personnel training achieved by the comprehensive deepening of innovation and entrepreneurship education under the guidance of the “three creations” education concept. In undergraduate education we have always adhered to the concept of “talent training, undergraduate education is the root”, “adopting adult education to become a talented person”, “thick foundation, interdisciplinary, encouraging innovation and taking the lead”, "student-centered development" and the "five values" of"motivating the dual enthusiasm of teacher education and student learning", thus forming an innovative entrepreneurship education model with the characteristics of a comprehensive university that combines general and professional education, personality and innovation capability as well as examples and exploration. In an environment with innovative culture and academic freedom, the university supports relevant policies and measures in funding guarantee, venue facilities, performance rewards, promotion of professional titles, etc. to strongly guarantee the demonstration of the innovative capability and results of our students. We have achieved organic integration between competition and teaching, competition and research, ‘competition and two innovations’ as well as competition and industry-university collaboration. We have created a sound momentum that promotes teaching, learning and innovation with competition.

It is reported that the assessment of the 2019 academic competitions will expand to include competitions such as higher education teaching achievements awards and teaching reform papers awards.
