Textbook are the carrier of curriculum teaching content. First-class curriculum teaching needs first-class teaching materials to support. At present, the school is working hard to promote first-class curriculum construction and classroom-centered teaching reform. Compiling and selecting first-class textbook are necessary .

In order to promote teachers to compile and select excellent teaching materials and promote the exchange of excellent textbooks , our library and the school teaching materials construction center jointly organized the "Selection and Promotion of Excellent Book Reviews"  to solicit excellent teaching materials and book reviews for various departments and colleges, and have received many wonderful submissions. We will gradually display them for readers.

In the first phase, I would like to share with you the "Introduction to Surveying and Mapping" in the eyes of Professor Wang Zhengtao of the Institute of Surveying and Mapping and Deputy Editor Ren Xiang of Wuhan University Press.

Enlightenment Work of Surveying and Mapping: Introduction to Surveying and Mapping

 By  Wang Zhengtao

Surveying and mapping is an ancient subject with a long history. With the progress of human society,  economy development  and the improvement of the level of science and technology, the theory, technology, method and subject connotation of surveying and mapping have been constantly changing. Especially in the contemporary era, due to the development of space technology, computer technology and communication technology, the theoretical basis, engineering technology system, research field and scientific objectives of surveying and mapping are undergoing profound changes to meet the needs of the new situation. Surveying and mapping has become a science and technology that collects, measures, analyzes, displays, manages and utilizes information related to spatial distribution of the earth and other entities. Its service objects and scope have gone far beyond the relatively narrow application fields of traditional surveying and mapping, and have expanded to various fields related to geospatial information in national economy and national defense construction.

An Introduction to Surveying and Mapping" is an enlightening textbook for surveying and mapping, It is rich in content, The analysis will enable students to have a comprehensive and general understanding of surveying and mapping before receiving professional education at the beginning of their admission, let them have a clearer understanding of their major, understand the cutting-edge hightech and social status of surveying and mapping major, nurture students' love of surveying and mapping major, and stimulate students' interest and love in this major.

This book is a general teaching material for public basic courses of surveying and mapping engineering, which is organized by Wuhan University and led by six academicians, under the guidance of the National Surveying and Mapping Teaching Committee. The book is divided into 11 chapters, including geodetic surveying, photogrammetry, cartography, engineering survey, marine surveying and mapping, spatial positioning and navigation technology, remote sensing science and technology, geographic information system, survey adjustment and data processing, geospatial informatics and digital earth, etc. The textbook covers all branches of surveying and mapping, as well as new contents and concepts brought by new surveying and mapping technologies. The structure of the textbook is rigorous, and each chapter is self-contained and interconnected . The content of the textbook is scientific and complete, facing the present and the future, following the international advanced standards and levels, absorbing the latest domestic and foreign advanced achievements, and having a strong foresight.  This textbook integrates the popularization and professionalism of surveying and mapping technology, combines the breadth and depth comprehensively, systematically and authoritatively reflects the technical connotation of surveying and mapping, it is an excellent textbook that combines theory and practice closely.

After years of teaching practice, extensive nationwide application, and continuous revision and improvement, the content of this book (the third edition) has become increasingly scientific and systematic, explaining profound theories in simple language.  It can be used not only as a teaching material for professional basic courses of surveying and mapping , but also as a reference book for scientific and technological workers and managers engaged in this field to learn professional knowledge.

My opinion on the Textbook of "Introduction to Surveying and Mapping"

By /Ren Xiang

In a blink of an eye, it has been 16 years since the first edition of "Introduction to Surveying and Mapping" was published.

The book "Introduction to Surveying and Mapping" is a supporting textbook for a public basic course offered by Wuhan University. The first edition was published in 2004, the second in 2008 and the third edition in 2015. The first to third editions of this textbook are respectively the national planning textbooks for the "Tenth Five-Year Plan", "Eleventh Five-Year Plan" and "Twelfth Five-Year Plan" of general higher education. Since the Ministry of Education launched the construction of top-quality courses, this textbook has been a supporting textbook for the national top-quality course "Introduction to Surveying and Mapping". As the editor in charge of the book, I would like to talk about my understanding of this book from the perspective of publication.

As early as 1996, In view of the insufficient understanding and unstable thinking of the students majoring in surveying and mapping at that time, Academician Ning Jinsheng, who has just stepped down as president of Wuhan University of Surveying and Mapping and served as director of the National Surveying and Mapping Education  Committee, proposed to offer a general course. Let freshmen have a comprehensive understanding of the basic theory and latest technological development of surveying and mapping and its status and role in national economy and national defense construction. To enhance their understanding of the major and their enthusiasm for learning, since 1997, the "Introduction to Surveying and Mapping" led by six academicians has officially started, and began to compile school-based teaching materials. Until the first edition of the teaching materials was published in 2004, the school-based teaching materials had already changed their drafts several times and were more mature.

As a general course textbook for surveying and mapping, Academician Ning Jinsheng has a clear positioning from the very beginning. He hopes to compile an easy-to-understand, concise and  science textbook to achieve the teaching purpose of "thick foundation and wide-ranging. As surveying and mapping involves many different professional branches, each branch has more than a dozen professional courses. How to express these professional knowledge in comprehensive and popular language is indeed a big challenge for academicians and professors. I remember that every time at the finalization meeting, the academicians produced manuscripts that far exceeded the prescribed number of words, but due to the limit of the total number of words, they had to reluctantly delete the manuscripts they had written so hard, which was really a last resort.

Although Ning Jinsheng, the editor-in-chief has always emphasized the popularity of teaching materials since the first edition, these academicians and professors are all majors in science and teaching research, and coupled with the complex knowledge , the final manuscript submitted by everyone is not what he imagined, he has slowly accepted this reality. I think this is perhaps the most practical result.

Honestly, in the publishing field, there are few precedents of so many academicians co-editing a textbook, so the publishing house paid special attention to this textbook from the beginning. It is the first-class level of domestic textbooks in both content editing and printing.  Among the surveying and mapping textbooks published by our agency, only this book was printed in full color at the time, and the best  80g double gummed paper was used at that time. This is to ensure that the book is not only first-class in content, but the binding quality must also match the content. So as not to disappoint the the painstaking efforts of academicians and professors.

In content writing, the editors are also extremely serious. Before the submission of each edition, the editorial board will gather all the authors to hold a finalization meeting, and the authors of each chapter will report their first draft to everyone.  The reason for this is to brainstorm and prevent duplication or contradiction. There are many intersections between various branches of surveying and mapping. This kind of centralized discussion avoids unnecessary duplication and is indeed very necessary.

Up to now, this textbook has been published in three editions, and each revision will add many new development contents, thus truly keeping pace with the times.

In recent years, Guang Ming Daily, Hubei Daily and other domestic media have made detailed reports on the deeds of many academicians of Wuhan University in the same course, which has attracted extensive attention from the education field . As a supporting teaching material for this course, I think this book is a condensation of the teaching and research achievements of these academicians and professors and deserves its due recognition.
