Introduction of the Lecturer

  Liu Tingting is a lecturer in the Department of Sociology, Wuhan University who is mainly engaged in teaching and research in social work. She gained her PhD Degree from the Department of Social Work and Social Administration, The University of Hong Kong in 2012, and then worked as a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Applied Social Sciences, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Previously, she got her Master Degree and Bachelor Degree from the Department of Sociology, Nanjing University and the Department of Sociology, Anhui University, respectively. Her research interests include issues in social work with children and youth and their families. Her papers appear at several high-level Chinese and International academic journals such as Social Indicators Research and Collection of Women’s Studies.

 

Description of the Course “Introduction to Social Work”

  As the fundamental and core course of social work, “Introduction to Social Work” aims at introducing basic concepts and knowledge, which can help students form an overview of social work and pave the way for further study in the field. The content of this course mainly includes the history and development, important concepts and theories, values and ethics, methods and skills, and working fields of social work. In addition to teaching the basic knowledge, this course also pays attention to issues in real life that are related to social work development with both global and local perspectives.

  This course adopts classroom lecture as its major form of teaching, with the assistance of typical cases and multimedia resources. Besides, the course also arranges some interactive sessions such as group discussion, role play, and classroom game, in order to increase student participation and study experience. The assessment of the course will consider three aspects of students’ performance including close-book exam, group presentation, and classroom participation. After taking the course, students are expected to form an overview of social work, learn the background and significance of social work, master related theories and methods, and build the identification of professional values.
