Introduction to the Course Director

  Xiang Jiuyu, male, born on December 26, 1964, is a professor and doctoral tutor at Wuhan University at present; a director of Marxism Theory Research and Construction Project of CPC Central Committee and the National Social Science Fund Project; a council member of Translator Association in Hubei Province; an adjunct professor of Translation Study Center at Central China Normal University; an expert reviewer of the academic journal “Foreign Languages Research”; a visiting professor at Columbia University in the USA; a member of American Political Association and American Educational Research Association; a gainer of the 31st Postdoctoral Fund in China and a gainer of the outstanding doctoral dissertation in Hubei Province. Professor Xiang has published more than 100 papers on the important domestic and foreign academic journals and more than 10 works and has chaired or participated in more than 20 scientific research projects at home and abroad, besides, his scientific payoffs gained more than 10 national and provincial awards. Over the years, he has taught such courses as Management Ethics and Methodology of Ideological and Political Education ,etc. in English to undergraduates and his teaching is lively and loved by his students. Specific experiences are as follows.

  1. Learning experiences at home and abroad

  In June, 1990, he graduated from Central China Normal University and received a Bachelor of Arts degree in English Language.

  In June, 1997, he graduated from Central China Normal University and received a master’s degree in law.

  In June, 2001, he graduated from Wuhan University and received a doctorate in law.

  In June, 2004, he accomplished his research on the value of western market socialist in the center for postdoctoral research- Scientific Socialism Institute in Central China Normal University.

  From 2010 to 2012, he studied at Columbia University in the City of New York, mainly engaged in learning and studying philosophy of culture and foreign Marxism and also successively visited Harvard University, New York University, Princeton University, Stanford University, Yale University and other well-known American universities.

  In June, 2014, he studied in the training class prepared for those backbones in the field of teaching and scientific research of philosophy and social sciences in the Central Party School.

  2. Work Experiences

  From August, 1990 to June, 1998, he engaged in teaching and studying on English language and literature at Central China Normal University and served as assistant and lecturer.

  Since June, 2001, he has taught in School of Politics and Administration, School of Law, School of Politics and Public Management and School of Marxism at Wuhan University as a lecturer, associate professor and professor. In 2004, he was unconventionally promoted to be a professor. In 2006, he was selected as a doctoral tutor.

  Now he is a professor and a doctoral tutor in School of Marxism at Wuhan University, besides, he is an invited researcher in the Collaborative Innovation Center of Marxism Theory and Chinese Practice.

  3. Academic titles

  He is a communication reviewer to assess the national excellent doctoral dissertations and an evaluation expert to review the projects of the national social science fund, the social science fund approved by ministry of education, the scientific research initial fund approved by ministry of education for talents from overseas and the national postdoctoral science fund. What’s more, he is a member of American Education and Human Society, American Educational Research Association and Hubei Translators Association. He is also an adjunct professor in Translation Research Center at Central China Normal University and an expert reviewer of the academic journal "Foreign Languages Research”.

  He is the main director of Marxism Theory Research and Construction Project of CPC Central Committee named “Research on the World Meanings and Realization Approaches of Chinese Dream”.

  4. Awards or Honorary Titles

  He has successively participated in writing the “curriculum textbooks for the 21st century”, the “key construction textbooks regulated by National Board of Education during the period of the ‘National Ninth Five-Year Plan’ aiming at general institutes of higher education” and the “national planning textbooks during the period of the ‘National Eleventh Five-Year Plan’ aiming at general institutes of higher education”,and there are a total of 12 works written by him as the only author, co-author, editor-in-chief and co- editor-in-chief. Besides, he has published more than 100 papers in “Seeking Truth”, “People’s Daily” (Theory Edition), “Guangming Daily” (Theory Weekly), “Marxism Research”, “Education Research” and other important academic journals or newspapers.He won the title of outstanding doctoral graduates in Wuhan University, and the “curriculum textbooks for the 21st century”, co-edited with others, won the second prize of the excellent college textbooks selected by the Ministry of Education. He gained the subvention of the 31st Postdoctoral Fund in China, and his doctoral dissertation won the first prize among the excellent doctoral dissertations in Wuhan University and in Hubei Province. His work won the second prize (No. 5) of outstanding achievements in the fourth humanities and social sciences research in Chinese universities and the third prize of outstanding achievements(monographs and works written as the only author) in the fifth Philosophy and Social Sciences in Hubei Province, besides,a series of papers written by him won the second prize of outstanding achievements(series papers) in the seventh Philosophy and Social Sciences in Hubei Province,What’s more, his papers won the third prize of outstanding achievements (papers) both in the eighth and ninth selection in the field of Social Sciences in Wuhan. “Interpretation on Classics Written by Sages and Men of virtue in China- Ceremony” won the third prize of outstanding achievements(works, wrote with the other author, the first author) in the thirteenth selection in the field of Social Sciences in Wuhan and his papers won the second prize of outstanding achievements (papers) in the fourteenth selection in the field of Social Sciences in Wuhan.

 

 

Introduction to Management Ethics

  As human management practice enters into the modern stage, the trends of systematization, democratization, being scientific, legalization and humanization of management activities are developing continuously, so management ethics came into being at the right moment. Management ethics belongs to the category of applied ethics, in management discipline group, it is also a branched management science which generated from the differentiation between management and ethics and their reciprocal intersection and interaction. Management ethics bases on management and uses the basic theories and methods of applied ethics to discuss ethical and moral phenomena in management activities. Therefore, management ethics has both the discipline traits of management and the subject characteristics of ethics especially applied ethics, namely, this discipline has the applicability、the marginal prosperity and the value transcendence. Management Ethics is a course that systematically introduces the ethical nature of management and the management essence of ethic, the basic principles of management ethic, the ethical requirement in management operation and the ethical qualities and moral cultivation of managers and other issues. Management ethics makes management as meridian and ethics as weft to form its own theoretical system and is one of professional elective courses in management major.

 

Course Features

 This course emphasizes on both theory and practice, combines the classic theories, methods with the modern new techniques and methods, guides students to flexibly learn and apply theoretical knowledge and pay attention to cultivating their ability to identify and solve ethical problems in practical management activities. This course has rich and informative content and systematic knowledge structure.The course director has a profound theoretical basis and strong teaching and scientific research ability in the field of management ethics and he can integrate his scientific research achievements and explorations into teaching to improve teaching quality.

 

Course Goal

Learning this course can improve the basic quality of students and make them to be modern management talents of a new generation who have both higher management ability and good quality, besides, it can allow students to further think about management idea and behavior in management working practice, to make various management behavior tend to be more ethical and to grasp the correct ethical orientation of enterprise development. Management ethics is a subject with strong practical prosperity which requires students to place themselves in a realistic environment, to use the basic theories and principles of management ethic to analyze the real ethical issues and moral dilemmas, to make right judgments about ethical and moral phenomena in management activities and to make the right choice about management behavior.

 

Main Content of the Course

  1. Introduction to management ethics, namely, the thought development of management ethic in China and in the West, the birth of management ethics and the research object, discipline nature, research methods and research significance of management ethics. 2.The ethical nature of management and the management essence of ethic, the former includes management is human’s “species characteristic”,  the duality of management, management is the dialectical unification of regularity and value and the unity of management and ethics, while the latter contains that ethic is a construction activity that human make on their inner self management, ethic is a special way of social management and self-discipline management is the highest form of human management. 3.the basic principles of management ethic, including principle of collectivism, humanitarianism, fairness and reasonableness, honesty and trustworthiness and environment protection principle. 4. the ethical requirement in management operation,mainly including the ethical requirement in making decisions, organizing activities and controls.5. the ethical qualities and moral cultivation of managers, including the connotation, the composition, the ways of improvement and enhancement of the ethical qualities and moral cultivation of managers. 6. the development prospect and future of management ethics, including the realization of the unification of nature and society,the unity of scientific prosperity and social nature and all-round development of human in management and the establishment of a prospect goal of the harmonious development of society and human in management.

 

Course Requirements for Students’ Ability Cultivation

Through learning the course of management ethics, students are required to initially master the basic theory and knowledge of management ethics and are encouraged to actively participate in class discussions and improve their expression ability and critical thinking skills. So that the majority of students can know about the new knowledge about management ethics, improve thinking methods of management ethics and establish the management ideas and modes which conform with the trend of the times to improve their management quality and level.
